It's hard to keep your favorites in Internet Explorer in ship shape. If you are like me you have several hundred that you've bookmarked through the years. Undoubtedly, some of these shortcuts are no longer valid. But clicking on every shortcut to see if it works is just not applealing to me. Also many websites have what is know as a "favicon"--an icon file in the root of the website that gives a graphical representation of the website in the address bar and before each shortcut in Favorites. However, if you empty the Internet Cache you may loose these icons. Two utilities are readily available to make a permanent favicon for each of your favorites: Faviconizer and FavOrg. You can find these by searching the internet. However, each of these are rather old, and don't provide an option to delete dead shortcuts. Also neither of these utilities will display the favicon that is being updated. I've wanted to write a utility to replace these two legacy programs using all managed code using VB.NET for some time now--but never got around to it until now. "Favorites Updater" requires Internet Explorer version 6 or later, .Net Framework version 2.0, and Windows 2000 or later. It provides two options: (1) delete dead shortcuts and (2) update the favicon and store it permanently. Because an internet shortcut is basically an INI file with an extension of URL, it is possible to use an ini file reader/writer class to update the shortcuts. The rest of the code is pretty straightforward and is heavily commented. Hope you find this utility useful. Please leave any bug reports or suggestions as a comment to this code. UPDATE: Handles favicons that are images other than icons. Verify delete added. Sound on delete and finish (optional).
