Hello everyone.

My 10 year old nephew has asked me to teach him to make a video game and being the super keen uncle that I am said that I would without the first idea of how to make one. I do have a reasonable knowledge of Visual Basic and so thought I would use that to make something super simple at first and figure he and I can work on improvements from there. When I was a kid they had these books of code that you could just copy onto the computer and you had a simple working game and as you learned more you could alter these and build on the. Does anyone know of anything like that for VB or even C++? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all in advance

G

Hmm, the ABSOLUTELY easiest way to make a video game is by usin Game Maker 5.3A, no doubt about that.

Thats perfect for beginners like a 10years old. No need of any skillz, just drag and drop.

Hope this helps.

That's cool I will take a look at that software. I tried Games Factory but was not impressed. It's very cumbersome and awkward. I am hopeing to get him coding a little. Part of my motivation is to get him interested in the computer beyond games but a point and click is probably the best place to start at his age.

Thank you both. You'll hear from me again as this project develops I'm sure. Smile

There is commands for a codecompiler for more advanced games. The coding language is way easier than basic.

I never was good at programming, then I picked up DarkBASIC, from the game creators-http://www.thegamecreators.com/ - they specificly built programming languages just for Game Development.There are several other things that they make, like the 3D Gamemaker and FPS Creator, all of which are drag and drop game builders. If you want the programming interface, for VisualBasic -> DarkBASIC DarkBASIC Pro(many a famous games made with this) PlayBASIC OmegaBASIC

C++ -> Dark Game SDK

There are demos for all there products, and you can also get software to make media for your games, also, there are forums there, and everybody is happy to help you! - and they are clean BigGrin

Kids love RPG Games, and there's nothing better than RPG Maker XP.  There are "Illegal" downloads out there for it, and pleanty of resources, or you can purchase the software from Enterbrain (Which would be a great XMAS present for any kid who wants to make very customized video games).

VB isn't very good for making RPG games unless you use DirectX.

The Games Factory (TGF) or MultiMedia Fusion (MMF) are quite good. Wink

I've been programming with VB for 17 years. Started with VB4 16bit Pro, VB5 Pro, VB6 Pro/Enterprise and now VB3 Pro. But I'm no expert, I'm still learning.
